Amy Acuff Trivia

Postby EPelle » Fri May 27, 2005 11:30 pm

Acuff began her career as a five-year-old, competing in the 50m, 100m and 200m races in A.A.U. competition.

Question: What was the first national record Acuff broke (year, 1985)?

What was Acuff:s High Jump PB at the age of 13?

Acuff was a two-sport star in high school. What was significant about Acuff:s grade-9 year?

I saw her jump 5'8" (dunno if it was that 5'8 1/2" 13YO PR) in Alice, TX at an AAU meet that year. She attracted a crowd then too.

In previous discussions, the point has been raised that women athletes want to be considered primarily as athletes, not 'cheesecake'. I'm pretty sure that does not include AA. She spends a lot of time and energy to marketing herself as 'cheesecake.' Saying that is to 'make a living', doesn't change her choices. I'm not saying this is bad or good (I personally enjoy watching AA compete). I like this board's moderation in terms of deleting 'drooling' threads, but we have to admit, it IS part of the sport, whether we like it or not.

Part of what's attractive about Acuff is her bold personality. Somewhere I read that she hitchiked cross country to or from Texas. A track meet was involved.

I unquestionably would have been against it, whether my daughter or not, but in some way you have to admire it. My guess is that those around her found that she was uncontrollable.

Having said that, I am sure that Acuff herself has always felt in control, which is why she is able to do what she does.

>>'drooling' threads<<

Had a hard time deciding if I was going to give the source of that trivial bit of info on Acuff... never seen the homepage before -- it came up on an Acuff search. Seems like they (the author) did not minimize Acuff:s accomplishments, and did a fairly good job of making her out to be the good athlete she is.
