How about this one, Adhemar Ferreira da Silva, twice Olympic champion in TJ?

Quote:
In 1959, Adhemar acted in the film Orfeu Negro, by French director Marcel Camus, which won the Golden Palm of the Cannes Film Festival and an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.

I guess it depends on what you emphasize. Who is the best athlete to ever win an Oscar, Emmy or Tony award or who is the best actor/actress to ever win a gold medal, global championship, MVP, Cy Young, grand slam tennis event or a major golf event?

What about Paul Robeson and Tommy Lee Jones? Also, no one's mentioned O.J. Simpson. By the way, is Arnold Schwarzenegger an athlete?

Been a lot of athlete/actors...

Sugar Ray Robinson
Merlin Olson
Johnny Weissmuller
Buster Crabbe
Roman Gabriel
Carl Weathers
Fred Dryer
Rafer Johnson
Frank Gifford
Bruce Jenner
Bernie Casey
Fred Williamson
Alex Karras
Woody Strode
Timmy Brown
Anthony Davis

Jim Brown was the best at what he did.

I didn't know about Casey the football player and I had never heard of Buster Crabbe and Woody Strode. Thanks for the info. I wouldn't compare Karras and Williamson to Jim Brown since they were never the best in their sport, and Tim Brown is debatable since he received his biggest honor in college when he won the Heisman Trophy. And Casey never reached the pinnacle in either acting or football, but he's obviously the most accomplished actor of the folks you've listed. By the way, which Anthony Davis are you talking about? There are a bunch listed in wikipedia. I think you'll agree that Jones definitely towers above all of them as actor with multiple Oscars, Oscar nominations and Emmys to his credit.

I'm not talking about that Tim Brown. Timmy Brown was a lot like Brian Westrook back in the days of Jim Brown. He was also a Philly Eagle out of Ball State. Good looking guy! Great all purpose back.

I was talking about that USC Anthony Davis.

Sure on Tommy Lee Jones.

To me it's a no brainer, Jim Brown. Not only did Jim do as much or more on the playing the field with quality, but he also did more on the silver screen as well.

O.J. would have to be 2nd.

Forget Casey the football player! He was an NCAA 4th-placer in our sport.

Bonus points if you can name the event and his alma mater (without looking of course). A tricky clue is Rafer Johnson.

Wrong! I don't disagree with the first part of your statement, but the second part I take exception with. Brown isn't in the same league as Casey or Jones when it comes to acting, and bad hammy has named three more that I had forgotten about. Of course those folks couldn't hold Brown's jockstrap on the gridiron.

Roscoe Lee Browne wasn't too shabby either.

Married with children is my favorite sitcom. Ed O'Neill (Al Bundy) was a linebacker.

Sports Illustrated had an article about Woody Strode only a few weeks ago, about how he was one of the first blacks to integrate the NFL, after playing at UCLA.

Strode played on the same UCLA team with another black athlete Kenny Washington. Washington would lead the country in total offense. Great college back.

The Sports Illustrated article was actually about Washington and Strode - but I was blanking on Washington's name when I sent that last post.

You left out the most famous guy in the 1939 UCLA backfield with Strode and Washington. Some guy named Jack Robinson.

High hurdles, BGSU's first T&F All-American.

Calling Bruce Jenner an actor is a bit of a stretch. Yes, he was in Can't Stop The Music, but I figure that single-handedly advanced the argument for paying athletes to do track...so they wouldn't do movies.

Jenner played the part of Jim Gregory in "Grambling's White Tiger". Gregory being a white QB from nearby Corcoran. I work with one of his linemen from back in the day. Jenner was great in the part.
