In Saturday's NFL game, the announcer referred to Dallas receiver Miles Austin as a former track star. I never heard of him. What did he do?

He went to Monmouth U in Jersey?. He's an undrafted free agent.

His sister went to Rutgers on a track scholarship but apparently they wouldn't give him one.

He ran 4.47 at the NFL combine and had the highest vertical of all the receivers.

I know I haven't answered your question but let me add...I'm ecstatic that he is a Dallas Cowboy.

He has Superstar written all over him.

As a high schooler he threw the javelin, sprinted, long jumped and triple jumped. No I don't know his marks.

hey - I can google too!

Miles marks in HS are not that impressive - perhaps even below average

100 10.77
200 22.4
LJ 22’ 4”
TJ 43’ 8”
Jav one report 203-7 several @ 214’ 8”

BS alarm is sounding. wiki sez:

Quote:
He recorded the second-longest javelin throw in Bergen County history with a throw of 214 feet, 8 inches. Austin finished third in the triple jump at the New Jersey Meet of Champions in 2001.

but there is no listing of him in the HS annual in the Jav, which goes well below 214'.

I did read one blurb about the 203 being in an 'official' meet while the 214 was in a dual meet. What was lower limit of list? interest meter for me 4/10. Although the jumps - and sprints for that matter seemed pretty modest for an emerging star wide rec in NFL ("4.47 at the NFL combine and had the highest vertical of all the receivers")

Official Times - Wide Receivers - Group 5
40 YARD DASH TIME
Chad Jackson 4.32
Devin Aromashodu 4.35
Derek Hagen 4.42
Skyler Green 4.44
Will Blackmon 4.46
Miles Austin 4.47

I couldnt confirm the results of the verticle jump as the results of some WRs appears to have not been recorded.

edit: bad link removed

If the 10.77 and ~200' are legit marks, then he was in VERY rare company for 21st century high school athletes. We drool over combined event prospects with engines like that.

I think his numbers were very good if he were to become a decathlete. Besides name someone who's done better doing both short sprints, both jumps and the javelin? The list would probably include other past/current decathletes.

At the 2002 NJSIAA North 2 Group 2 & 3 sectionals, he ran 10.80 (1st - 100m), 22.4 (1st - 200m), 50.7 (4th - 400m), and jumped 22' 4 1/2" (1st - LJ).

I have to say that is very good for someone who threw the Javelin over 200 ft!!!!!!

A guy with that speed and ups can jump a lot farther than 22-4 and 43-8.

Miles Austin was a multi-sport athlete in high school. I don't think that he played football until his junior year. His first love was basketball. He spent about 90 days a year training and competing in track and field. While he had good high school coaching, his training facilities were abysmal. He was tall and strong and physically was a monster (in the good sense) compared to most of his high school competitors. He did many events and undoubtedly could have run faster, jumped farther, and thrown the jav further had he had put in more time. He probably did not compete beyond the state championships. Sometimes the numbers do not tell the full story. Playing on a high school team that was not a powerhouse he didn't attract the attention of major football programs. But I guess Monmouth was good enough because look where he is now. Having originally come from Bergen County I am proud of his achievements. Incidentally Garfield High School has produced 2 active NFL players and one more recently retired from the NY Jets after having about a decade in the league, not bad for a high school that is only medium sized.

lonewolf - that didn't make any sens to me either. I did notice that he didn't place in his state HS 100 ... but who knows what the situation was there. Nevertheless some things seem 'out of sync'

Yeah, when a guy is the team stud doing all the events the rules allow sometimes he just goes, takes a jump and gets on to his next event. I doubt he worked on the jumps at all.
Hugo, Oklahoma HS had a kid like that a couple of years ago, Derrick Locke, except he was a little faster and jumped farther. He usually only took one 25 foot jump, without run up, collected his 10 points and left. He was a running back on two state HS football championship teams and is now playing football for Kentucky.
He has shown up at a few college track meets, still jumping 25 low. He does it with speed and power. Doesn't look like a long jumper, about 5-8, 190, charges down the runway, stutter steps if necessary, doesn't get two feet off the ground when he jumps, just sorta levitates 25 feet, lands standing up.
