Diniz overtraining?"Depuis le 17 mai, je n’ai pas pris un jour de repos. Ma plus petite semaine en volume était de 200 km. Ma prochaine journée de repos, ça sera le dimanche après ma course."
A quote from Diniz on Cybermarcheur. Doesn't sound good to me. Quick Silver Hong Kong

I'm surprised no one has mentioned this already. I heard this NPR report on the 50K race walk the other day. Apparently they were going to make the walkers walk on a granite surface that the competitors complained would cause stress fractures. The Beijing Olympic organizers didn't want to change the course but they did eventually cave in and spent 800,000 dollars to fix the course.
Diniz and Schawrzer seemed to have had a pre race plan. They went out together, shared drinks...and were realled in after 25 minutes. Schwarzer was lifting for about 15 minutes and managed to avoid a warning.
Diniz is now out the back door. Plenty of paddles being shown, but neither the viewers nor the walkers seem to know who is getting them! ETA...and now Diniz has regrouped and got himself back on the group. The Russian favourite is far more technically sound than his female counterpart! Thank heavens.
Amazingly, for the first time in many a year at a WC/OG, neither the resident result-data computer nor the host TV feed are showing any kind of charting. Not surprising that commentators aren't saying anything on the subject (just as we were mute in the stadium yesterday for the w20).
Don't talk to me about the farce of yesterday....that wonderful display of lovely lifting from the gun, for the first 40 minutes of the race from the Russian, get's the gap...and clicks into a somewhat clean technique. Schwarzer calling on the official to warn the Chinese in front of him!?
Rutter stops for at least 1 minute to tie his shoe
It's down to 4, Nizhegorodov, The Chinese (BO?) who is still lifting In all seriousness, Tallent is the only one who is definitely not lifting. Nizhegorodov and Schwarzer are cutting it very close. Bo doesn't even lock his knees ETA: Oh Good god, I'm knocking this off....GUESS who just got a paddle after I just wrote the above?Tallent!
WarningsRecall that
- a paddle for Tallent means he's LEGAL, but in danger of bending - any judge who's already shown Li a paddle can't show him another for the same thing - any judge who's given Li a red card can no longer judge him at all Quick Silver Hong Kong
Re: WarningsA paddle is a paddle, you get three and you're out! Last edited by Jaack on Thu Aug 21, 2008 4:52 pm, edited 1 time in total.
Reasearch is your friend! Schwarzer given a warning. Just gotten a caption, but none of the leaders are credited with a white flag! So, can you get a warning that isn't a warning? Is it just misadministration? Major champs are just so inconsistent with their warning system! Last edited by Jaack on Thu Aug 21, 2008 5:23 pm, edited 1 time in total.
OK, I just checked this, and it's true Nizhegorodov only had a 44:47 at that point when he set the WR, but saying they are on WR pace is still misleading. If they continue at the pace they're going, they will not be close.
You can get a warning that's JUST a warning and that doesn't have any real significance. Or you can get a DQ proposal from one of the judges - if you get three of those, you are DQed.
Oh for goodness sake, talk about picky! Nizhegorodov was on his own WR pace, what more do you want! He's actually off the lead group now, seems to be going through a bad patch! Last edited by Jaack on Thu Aug 21, 2008 5:22 pm, edited 1 time in total.
This is what is killing me, we use two different paddles for warning and a proposal. And the warning is generally verbal.
It's not being picky.
They have picked up the pace significantly since the 10k mark, but if you were just comparing the splits to the WR race, you'd have to say they have slipped outside WR pace, which makes it sound as if the pace is slipping. 1:49:00 at halfway for the top four - that's 3:38 pace now.
This is pointless, but WR pace can only ever be, under or on the targets achieved during the world record. Ego, at 10k, I was perfectly correct to say....they are on WR pace. As they were ahead of the 10k split achieved during that record! It's 3am towards the end of the Olympics, I'm watching blatant lifting go un noticed and I'm crankier than ever....
Diniz has been walking in fifth place, first behind the lead group, for a long time now, but he's still not losing much ground on the top 4. Still only 27 secs behind at 25k.
Kirdyapkin totally off the pace. Nymark nearly 5 minutes behind the leaders at halfway and Garcia 4:18 behind.

LiLi looks pretty much legal at this pace, but it's a disgrace that he's still on the course at all.

Li lost 6:26 between 40 and 45k
Rafal Fedaczynski is now going faster than anyone except Schwazer and is up into 11th place. Jesus Angel Garcia, as usual, paced himself well, and is now 4th, perhaps still secretly hoping one of the top 3 gets DQed... Last edited by Powell on Thu Aug 21, 2008 7:00 pm, edited 1 time in total.
