1-2 on the all-time list

Postby gh » Sun Apr 15, 2012 8:09 am

last week we celebrated the birthdays of a famous pair. Not only do they have the same birth day, they also have the same birth year.

And at one point they were the two top performers of all time in their event (same event). Anybody remember this chestnut?

No, don't go looking for twins; not even the same country.

Have they been Olympic champions?
Do you mean the week of April 2-8?

I know the history of HJ.
From 1965 to 1969
1. 2.28 Valeriy Brumel 04/14/1942
2. 2.27 Ni Chih-Chin 04/14/1942
In 1970
1. 2.29 Ni Chih-Chin 04/14/1942
2. 2.28 Valeriy Brumel 04/14/1942
From 1971
1. 2.29 Ni Chih-Chin 04/14/1942
2. 2.29 Patrick Matzdorf
3. 2.28 Valeriy Brumel 04/14/1942

Just wanted to confirm that we are not talking about the week of April 2-8.
Spent a lot of time to check this week. :(
Again, my translation errors. :(

Gennady, so you're clear on the subject, asking trivia questions isn't about who takes the most time to do research. It's about whether or not you have the knowledge stored in your brain already, or can figure it out from what you know about the history of the sport. For me, looking things up is cheating. Sorry.

A small explanation.
In your question you wrote "... last week ...", referring to the week of April 9 po15. I moved your question as a week from 2 to 8 April. I could not remember anything suitable.
Mickley gave the correct answer before anyone else(well-known fact in history HJ), which also was known for me..
The fact that in the week from 2 to 9 April, I asked a few questions on the forum and I suspect that I missed something interesting.
My further search and questions were directed not to, that would give the correct answer, but I was trying to find previously unknown to me fact.
I hope that this is correct in relation to the "trivia rules".

Gennady. No, It was referred to the week 8-14 and was posted on the 15th (new week).

If you knew about Brumel and Ni Chih-Chin why did you not post even if you were unclear about the "last week" thing?
You can't waste time if you want to beat Mikli :)

A second attempt to explain what happened. I hope the last.
In Russia, a new week begins Monday and ends on Sunday.
If on Sunday 15 we're talking about the event from 9 to 15, then we say that an event happened this week(current week).
If an event has occurred from 2 to 9, then we say that an event happened last week(week before).
This explains my doubts.
Now a bit about the history of the question (in time-line).
The question was asked in Sun Apr 15, 2012 7:09 pm.
My first clarifying question on Sun Apr 15, 2012 8:05 pm. I am in doubt and wait for an answer on my clarifying question.
Mikli gives the correct answer in 24 minutes later, at Sun Apr 15, 2012 8:29 pm.
Why do I need to repeat his answer? Mickley winner and Game is Over! :) But, I was tormented by the question of a possible second fact of the coincidence of dates of birth of top athletes which unknown to me(week from 2 to 9).
Without the clarification from gh and having my own doubts about a week from 2 to April 9, I spend my research for a possible match dates of birth of the top athletes.
Only after dukehjsteve's post I'm starting to understand what I was wrong :( in the translation and definition of the term "last week".
I hope that now my actions are more understandable.
