Friday 13th.

Postby gennady » Fri Apr 13, 2012 5:14 am

Today is April 13 birthday of two Olympic champions. Their total age of 219 years.
Both athletes represented one country. Together they have competed in two Olympics and won 3 Gold.
The first athlete won two Gold medals on his first Olympic Games. This combination of Gold medals was only once in Olympic history.
Another athlete set WR month before the Olympics, and then set a OR, and a month later lost his WR.
Call names of these athletes.

The first athlete sounds like Harold Osborn. Only once has anyone won the decathlon and an individual event (high jump). Osborn did it in Paris in 1924. I believe Harold competed in the first ever Texas Relays (1925).

Harold Osborn must have been in his mid 20's at Paris. That means the younger athlete would be not that much younger. Of course he is an American. A runner?

I usually go through your event first and then I remembered Ed Hamm who set a world record, won the gold in Amsterdam, and lost his world mark.

If it is Hamm, do you know what he has in common with Angelo Taylor, Derek Mills, and Derrick Adkins (besides Olympic gold medals)?

Indeed Ed Hamm is the second athlete, who today 106.
Edward Hamm set WR=7.90 in Cambridge Jul 07, 1928.
He won the Olympic Games July 31, 1928, beating Silvio Cator, who set a new WR=7.93/26 '0ј September 9, 1928 in Paris .
It is interesting to note that the Silvio Cator is still a Haitian NR-holder in LJ(83y).
My congratulations to the correct answer DoubleRBar. :D
